After 6 ½ years of dedicated service to the Glenelg Golf Club as our Biodiversity Manager, Monina has resigned from our Maintenance Team to transition into a contractor role.

From starting in 2018 by emptying bins and weeding gardens to expanding her role to include organising the Club’s Grazing the Course Dinner, managing Bee Hives, leading WHS management, securing and managing the Green Adelaide Grant, overseeing MAR reporting, coordinating our volunteers and now being a sough-after speaker at conferences across the country, sharing her innovative work at Glenelg Golf Club, Monina’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary!

Monina has been instrumental in putting Glenelg on the “sustainability map” within the Golf industry. Her passion for the environment and urban biodiversity has been recongised both nationally and internationally. She received the Claude Cockford Environmental Stewardship Award in 2022, alongside our Course Superintendent, Tim Warren. Her contribution also playing a pivotal role in the Glenelg Golf Club receiving the Clubs SA Environmental Awareness Award multiple times.

In 2024, Monina was individually honoured with the Environmental Steward Award at the Parks and Leisure Australia Awards (SA & NT) in 2024 and the National Environmental Stewardship Award for Parks and Leisure Australia.

Monina was also nominated for the inaugural R&A Women in Golf Awards Most Influential Woman in Golf in 2024.

Monina, along with Kate Torgsersen, have teamed up to create their own environmental consultancy, Torgsersen Gilbey, to offer services to the golf industry and beyond. Thank you, Monina, from all of us here at Glenelg Golf Club for all your hard work, dedication and passion. The impact you have made here will be felt for many years to come and looking forward to many more.

Today on #WildlifeWednesday, we welcome @13thbeach to our @inaturalist Golf Fore Nature Project which includes over 970 observations of over 530 species from fifteen golf clubs around Australia.

This morning, we held an online workshop with @13thbeach birding group on how to use and upload observations to @inaturalistorg.

We have been a bit quiet on our socials as @monina_greengecko has been on holiday in Taiwan.

Monina took a number of bird photos and was amazed with the bird diversity found in the cities.

This beautiful bird is a Taiwan Barbet - if you look closely you can see it has whiskers! 😍Monina took this photo in the @taipeibotanicalgarden

Monina has uploaded this observation and the other photos to @inaturalistorg. This sighting will become part of a project called Avifauna of Taiwan which has over 240,000 observations.

FrogID Week, hosted by the Australian Museum and held annually, anyone with a smartphone can help record frog calls through the free FrogID app, and help better understand frogs and environmental health around the country. It aims to monitor frogs populations and distributions over time, helping us to understand how frogs and their ecosystems are responding to a changing planet.

From croaks and barks, to whistles and bleats, every frog species makes a unique sound. Using the free FrogID app, you can record the frogs calling around you and help us count Australia’s frogs. (Extract from the @frogidaus page).

The app is easy to use. Download it this week to participate in the count and find out what frogs are on your golf course, or in your backyard.

Pollinators are key to biodiversity, and globally, nearly 90 percent of wild flowering plant species depend, at least in part, on the transfer of pollen by animals. Over 75% of the world’s food crops (by type) rely on animal pollinators for yield and/or quality and these crops contribute 35% of global crop volume and represent an estimated market value of AUS$350-$860 billion. (extract from Australian Pollinator Week).

Today, we are sharing a photo of a Pied Stilt. The Aquifer Storage Recover cells at @glenelggolf have been drained for maintenance and are attracting birds which are normally found on mud flats.

Pied Stilts use their long, slender bills to forage for food in various aquatic environments. They probe sand and mud for molluscs and worms, scoop up brine shrimp and other crustaceans from the water and even capture flies and insects from the air and water's surface.

Reptiles can be found on every continent (except Antarctica). Some reptiles are threatened due to legal and illegal trade.

Insects provide a rich source of protein, helping birds replenish their energy reserves before continuing their flights. The decline and disruption of insect populations at breeding grounds and along migration routes pose a significant threat to the survival and well-being of birds.

Kate and Monina see many opportunities to involve kids in education about the importance of golf courses to urban biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
